Privacy Engineering Careers
Privacy engineering is emerging as a new specialization, critical to both companies and government agencies. Recent job postings recruit engineers who can “develop technical solutions to help mitigate privacy vulnerabilities,” analyze “software designs and implementations from a privacy and UX perspective,” “research, document, and help remediate design decisions, operating procedures, or processes that may directly or indirectly contribute to future privacy risks,” “create cutting-edge privacy feature prototypes,” “help us lead better on privacy by example,” and “partner with key business, technical and legal stakeholders across various … business groups to implement Privacy by Design.”
We expect graduates of the MSIT Privacy Engineering program to be highly sought-after for privacy engineering job opportunities. The program will help connect students with recruiters and hiring managers. We are already being approached by a number of companies that are eager to hire our graduates. We've recently seen job postings from Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Intel, Mozilla, and other companies recuriting privacy engineers.
"To embed privacy by design into all things involving information technology, we will need to have privacy engineers, of which there are currently very few." -- Ann Cavoukian, Information and Privacy Commissioner in Ontario, Canada (Read Ann Cavoukian's paper on privacy engineering - Privacy Engineering: Proactively Embedding Privacy by Design)
"The PE program is definitely my career booster, it gives me the best skills to survive in the data-centric world and opens up a lot of opportunities. After finishing the program, I can not only engineer software, but also do it in a better way, which is a great competitive advantage I have in the job market. --Zhipeng Tian, PE 2014 graduate now a software engineer at LinkedIn
"If you are interested in moving beyond the legal framework to solve worldwide privacy problems, then this program is for you. Beyond the core curriculum, the privacy engineering program offers students the opportunity to pursue research interests, interact one-on-one with world-class faculty, and tackle challenging real world problems. --PE 2014 graduate, now a Data Privacy Analyst at Google
Career development opportunities
The MSIT Privacy Engineering program is designed to prepare students for careers as privacy engineers or technical privacy managers. In addition to academic preparation and hands on project experience, the program will include opportunities for students to learn about privacy careers and network with privacy professionals. Each year we will bring in privacy professionals from industry as seminar speakers and guest lecturers in our courses. We will provide students with opportunities to meet with these visiting professionals individually or in small groups.
The International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP) holds an annual Privacy Academy each fall and Privacy Summit each spring, which are typically attended by several thousand privacy professionals. Students in the program will be encouraged to join the IAPP, attend one or both of these events, which are an excellent opportunity to network with privacy professionals and future employers. Each semester the IAPP will award a travel and registration scholarship to one CMU MSIT Privacy student.
