Where's the "Biomedical" in Biomedical Informatics?

by Bradley Malin, Kathleen Carley, and Latanya Sweeney

Abstract

This research investigates the degree to which the biomedical informatics community is situated at the intersection of bioinformatics and medical informatics. As opposed to co-citation analysis, we utilize a social network approach to characterize the current state of interaction between the communities. We study the community by examining the editorial boards of 47 journals that serve as outlets for research in medical informatics, bioinformatics, and computational biology. From a social network perspective, our findings indicate that two individuals had prominent positions for fostering cross-disciplinary research. Despite the existence of these individuals, there exists only one publication outlet marginally in the intersection.
