Data Privacy Day

An event celebrating International Data Privacy Day, held annually on January 28th. CMU's Privacy Day event will take place from 10am-2pm in the Heinz History Center's first floor Great Hall. The event is free and open to the public, but paid admission is required to access History Center exhibitions. All kids ages 17 and under receive free admission to the museum.
About Data Privacy Day
Join us on Sunday, January 25, 2026 for our Privacy Day 2026 event at the Heinz History Center. CMU is once again celebrating International Data Privacy Day by bringing practical advice on protecting digital privacy to the general public off the university's campus. The Privacy Day event will take place from 10am-2pm. The event is open to the public, and no registration is required.
Data Privacy Day (now Data Privacy Week) is an international effort to empower and educate people to protect their privacy and control their digital footprint. For more information, please visit StaySafeOnline.org.

The event will take place in the Heinz History Center's first floor Great Hall. There will be greeters and signage to help find your way around.
Privacy Storytimes
introduce privacy to your children
Professor Lorrie Cranor will lead storytimes to introduce privacy concepts to kids of all ages. These storytimes will feature Professor Cranor's new original privacy story for young children, titled "Privacy, Please!", which discusses where children can find privacy in the world around them. Professor Cranor will be available to sign copies of the book, which will be offered for sale at the event.
Storytimes will also include readings of The EyeMonger by Daniel J. Solove, which aims to teach children about the importance of privacy and the impact of surveillance.
Privacy Talks by CMU Professors
Get Behind the Scenes with privacy experts
Professor Sarah Scheffler will share real-life anecdotes of personal data being collected and used in unexpected ways. Later in the event, Professor Joe Calandrino will step through a few recent FTC settlements, the details behind them, and the lessons they tell. These informational talks are targeted to a general audience of adults and teens.

Is Privacy Really Dead?
Privacy People challenges this common refrain by exploring how our understanding of personal data has shifted alongside the rise of mass surveillance.
Privacy Clinic
Learn how to protect your privacy

Our Privacy Day event will feature a Privacy Clinic. Attendees of the Privacy Clinic will learn more about how they can protect their privacy during their daily usage of digital technology. CMU’s information privacy and security students and researchers will provide information and answer your questions about privacy risks and remedies concerning many topics. The Clinic will include information and activities related to:
- Creating strong passwords
- Phishing
- Location Tracking
- Data on the Dark Web
- AI & Privacy
- iOS Privacy Labels
The Privacy Clinic will also include privacy-related crafts for participants of all ages.
